Summer Snapshot Review “X-Men: Apocalypse”

X-Men-Apocalypse3 X-Men-Apocalypse2 X-men-Apocalypse1

First, the Recap:

Trying to rebuild in the wake of events that unfolded during “Days Of Future Past”, the newly formed First Class X-men have found a semblance of peace, though their mere existence now having been that much more revealed to the world at large still has them in the crosshairs of the U.S. government and a frightened, non-understanding populace. Tranquility, however, is to be short-lived, as the awakening of the very first mutant, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), suddenly occurs. Completely disenchanted with the world as he finds it, the risen and hyper-powerful Apocalypse recruits a new team of followers, including a demoralized Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to shape the Earth into his liking. But, it then becomes up to Xavier (James McAvoy) and his still young X-men to rise up and challenge him.

Worth Seeing: NO

Next, my Mind:

Unfortunately, director Bryan Singer’s newest entry into the “First Class” film series falls short, unable to capture the character-driven depth and plot of the first two films while also suffering from at least one bit of serious miscasting (Sophie Turner as Jean Grey), at least in this reviewer’s opinion.  Even excellent character actor Isaac, who did so well as Po Dameron in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, cannot make Apocalypse a villain ultimately worth caring about. All visual bombast (which IS fun) but bad writing/dialogue, the highlights are Fassbender’s Magneto, Evan Peter’s Quicksilver, and an awesome little cameo by a certain hirsute icon.  Otherwise, very sadly, it all just collapses on its shape-shifting face.

As always, this is all for your consideration and comment.  Until next time, thank you for reading!
