Summer Snapshot Review “The Conjuring 2”
First, the Recap:
Following another story based on the real-life accounts documented in the case files of paranormal investigators Ed & Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga), this story picks up on the tail end of one supernatural encounter the pair have just faced and been shaken by when called to England to research claims of a mother (Frances O’Connor) who believes an evil spirit has taken over her youngest daughter, Janet (Madison Wolfe). Still initially skeptical upon arrival, the scenario and opinion quickly change and escalate into terror as the malevolent and vindictive spirits torment not only the Janet, but target the Warren’s as well, dredging up past fears especially within Lorraine. Soon, it is a bitter and dangerous fight against a force bent on their destruction.
Worth Seeing: Yes
Next, my Mind:
Director James Wan follows up the hugely successful first installment from 2013 with this next chapter in the tales of two Warrens, and does so with, honestly, mixed results. There is simply NO question the inherent creepiness and sense of tension-filled foreboding that accompanies the film is present, and as expected there are several “JUMP!!” moments along with one freaky nun! These visual moments certainly make viewers looking to be on edge for much of the 134 minute runtime happy. However, overall, it all just feels a tad too familiar to be as completely engaging and spine-chilling as the first movie. Perhaps it would also help to totally avoid trailers before going to see something like this, as anticipation in itself can be a real terrifying thrill.
As always, this is all for your consideration and comment. Until next time, thank you for reading!
