Film Review “Jurassic World”

First, the Recap:
If we’ve learned one thing from certain scenarios presented in films, it’s got to be “DON’T MESS WITH STUFF YOU SHOULDN’T!!” And yet, the scientists and advanced military minds continue to do so with grim determination in order to treat humanity to a new thrill, or even gain a new living weapon. Twenty-two years have passed since Jurassic Park first opened and failed, but time has not improved the decision-making process for those in charge. Still cultivating dinosaurs to populate the ultimate amusement park in hopes of revitalizing interest, park operations leader Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) and head geneticist Dr. Henry Woo (BD Wong) have cooked up a new, more dangerously exciting beast, the Indominus Rex. Great! What could go wrong?
With Claire’s visiting nephews, Zach & Gray (Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins), putting themselves in the center of the ensuing chaos, she seeks out the aid of old flame Owen (Chris Pratt) whose structural knowhow and ability to “tame” raptors make him a rather important man to have around. With the added pressure of trying to deal with the island’s current benefactor, Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan) getting involved, as well as InGen’s head of security, Vic Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio), who has his own ideas about the use of raptors, the race is on for Claire and Owen to locate Zach and Gray, arrange the safety of all the park’s visitors, and stop a man-made aberration that only has one thing in its mind. Oh, and survive it all!
Next, my Mind:
When this film was first announced, this reviewer freely admits he cringed at the thought. After the horror of number two and the “ok-ness” of number three, the thought that anything original could be done to this worn-out franchise seemed slim. However, (surprise, surprise!) this movie delivers an epic amount of entertaining bombast that brings everything back to what it should be–a monster movie! With a fresh cast headed by the always solid Howard and current “it” actor Pratt, the tone, look, and execution of the first film comes back to roaring life. The lively blend of both utter terror and humorous banter between characters lends itself well to this outing, and there is, of course, Indominus!
Visually spectacular in IMAX 3D, the potent imagery whisks the viewer away and into the heart of dino-sized anarchy once the insanely intelligent Indominus has made its escape to regions not intended for its occupancy. The raptor sequences are equally and pleasantly given a different twist, as is their very existence and use, thanks again to Pratt’s Owen. D’Onofrio makes for a classic bad guy you just want to get munched, while Howard’s Claire at first seems the villainess, but turns into a hesitant hero, especially as the film’s finale draws to its end, which in itself was quite satisfying on multiple levels, as an expected nod to the series wraps things up. Everything a summer event film should be, “Jurassic World” ends up being the exact shot in the arm the season has been waiting for.
As always, this is all for your consideration and comment. Until next time, thank you for reading!
