Snapshot Review “Rogue One”
First, the Recap:
It’s been 3 years since the dreaded events that ultimately created one of the universe’s most evil villains, Darth Vader, and the Empire’s grasp now threatens to swallow the galaxy and place it under a dark shadow and iron rule. Now with the plan in motion to achieve this, thanks to a new weapon called the Death Star, it seems all hope would be lost for the ragtag group known as the Rebel Alliance. But, one young woman, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), whose father Galen (Mads Mikkelsen) was an architect of the Death Star, now chooses to stand firm, convincing a small band of resistance fighters–Cassian (Diego Luna), K-2SO (voiced by Alan Tudyk), Chirrut (Donnie Yen), Baze (Wen Jiang), and others–to attempt a daring mission to steal the master plans for the weapon in order to reveal its one fatal flaw. But, standing in their way is Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), an Empire leader bent on destroying the Alliance forever.
Worth Seeing: YES
More than cementing the undisputable fact that the Mouse House purchasing Lucasfilm, hence taking the reins of a storied franchise, was a fantastic move, the second film set in the “Star Wars” universe under Disney’s guidance, marketing, and bottomless wallet soars with poise, more grounded, realistic visuals, and a decidedly grittier tone while finally allowing us to see a narrative we’d only previously heard hinted at, but never fleshed out. Gareth Edward’s directing, excellent pacing, emotive drama, explosive battle sequences, and another group of engaging new characters sweeps the viewer quickly and efficiently to a time long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Jones shines as the second heroine of this new run of films, and some interesting cameos by classic characters only adds more impact to the proceedings. Mendelsohn makes a great antagonist, and Forest Whittaker is also solid as Rebel outlaw Saw Gerrera. Folks, just go see this film!
As always, this is all for your consideration and comment. Until next time, thank you for reading!
