Summer Snapshot Review “Suicide Squad”
First, The Recap:
Dark times have come upon the denizens of Midway City, as in the wake of recent events involving a certain Man of Steel, the city is left defenseless against super powered threats. Enter Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), a shadowy government agent who has designs to resolve said issue–employ a group of dastardly villains, with a “leash”, to protect the city. Reluctantly, Waller’s plan is approved, and so Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), and Katana (Karen Fukuhara) under the command of Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) set out against the witch-goddess Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) to stop her from destroying humanity. Oh, and The Joker (Jared Leto) is around scheming, too!
Worth Seeing: YES
Some may have wanted this to be an “R”-rated equivalent of “Deadpool” given the material and characters being presented, but make no mistake, writer/director David Ayer, who’s no stranger to edgy content, delivers a crazy, over-the-top romp with this team of misfit and deadly offenders. Excellent special effects and equally adept camerawork immerse the audience into the chaos brought about by this team both in and out of action sequences, plus the writing for each character is, in this reviewer’s opinion, spot on in highlighting their respective quirks and idiosyncrasies. Smith and Robbie shine bright especially, but the entire ensemble cast here deserves kudos for their portrayals. Enchantress (and the person she really is) is played well by Delevingne, and Leto’s Joker IS a worthy successor to Heath’s legacy. Two fun cameos and even a little pathos is also found here. So, in short, let your freak flags fly and get ready to root for the bad guys!
As always, this is all for your consideration and comment. Until next time, thank you for reading!
