Winners, Surprises, Just “Eh” and Losers
Well, as 2014 starts, time to look back on the 2013 film year. Set a personal record, seeing a total of 55 films. As always, there were winners, surprises, a new genre explored, and losers. Definitely a “Year of the Geek” with all the fantasy and sci-fi based films, but it also went well beyond that. So without further ado…in MY opinion…here are:
The OVERALL Winners: “Star Trek: Into Darkness“, “Fast 6“, “Man of Steel“, “Despicable Me 2“, “Thor: The Dark World“, “Hunger Games: Catching Fire“, and “The Hobbit, Part 2“
Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Action Fun thanks to: “Beautiful Creatures“, “The Host“, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation“, “Oblivion“, “World War Z“, “Pacific Rim“, “RED 2“, “The Wolverine“, “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters“, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones“, “Riddick“, “Ender’s Game“, and “47 Ronin“
Good, but not OH I HAVE TO GO SEE THAT AGAIN…LIKE NOW would cover: “Snitch“, “The Great Gatsby“, “Paranoia“, and “Runner Runner“
SURPRISE!! at how good it was goes to: “Now You See Me“, “The Conjuring“, “Gravity“, “Captain Phillips“, “Frozen“, “Saving Mr. Banks“, and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty“
The Awesome Discovery of Independent/Small Budget Films and how AMAZING they can be awards go to: “Byzantium“, “The Spectacular Now“, “Enough Said“, “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete“, “All Is Lost“, “About Time“, “How I Live Now“, “Nebraska“, “Out of The Furnace“, “American Hustle“
And, sadly, the losers/disappointing films for me: “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters“, “A Good Day To Die Hard“, “Jack The Giant Slayer“, “Iron Man 3“, “After Earth“, “The Internship“, “Monsters University“, “The Lone Ranger“, “Grown Ups 2“, “R.I.P.D.“, and “The Book Thief“.
So there it is! Again, a great year overall, and can only hope 2014 brings it just as strong. Time will tell! God bless and here’s to a great new year in film!
